General Information
Webinar Overview
Public employment records often contain information that most people would consider confidential or private. But these are still public records subject to disclosure in response to a public records request. To withhold all or part of a responsive record, you must identify an applicable exemption. The Public Records Act (PRA) contains exemptions for some information and “other statutes” may contain exemptions for other information or records. However, applying these exemptions can be tricky. Many local government staff are unsure of when and what to disclose or even what they can expect in terms of privacy of their own personal information.
Educational Objectives
This updated webinar will dive into how the Public Records Act applies to personnel and employment records, including what, specifically, should be kept in a personnel file and what records or information may be exempt (and how to clarify when it is unclear). This webinar will also review requirements and best practices for managing public records requests involving personnel and employment records, such as implementing the new exemption for the employment information of survivors of domestic violence, assault, and stalking.
