Webinar Overview

The Open Public Meetings Act (OPMA) has many requirements that elected officials and local government leaders must understand to avoid committing a violation. However, knowing the basics of these requirements is only the first step in ensuring compliance; there are many nuanced day-to-day challenges that can arise when adhering to the OPMA. This webinar will discuss common issues and provide practical tips to help address some of these challenges. It is intended for those who already have a basic understanding of the OPMA and are looking for additional guidance.

Educational Objectives

This webinar will cover the following OPMA topics:

  • Common challenges: committees and advisory boards; is it a meeting? (quorum plus action), serial meetings (email and social media), "business" meetings vs. "workshops."
  • Executive sessions: basis for having one and practical management of them.
  • Practical considerations: notice requirements, canceling meetings, public comment (including zoom-bombing).

Presenters

  • Steve Gross, Legal Consultant, MRSC.
